The Netherlands, also known as Holland. Did you know the difference between Holland and the Netherlands? Well i will explain. The Netherlands has 12 provinces. Very small compared to Canada or the United States. Two of the provinces have the name North Holland and South Holland. The largest cities, Amsterdam and Rotterdam are located in (south) Holland. So that's where the confusion starts. If a person from Amsterdam says, i am from holland, then that person is correct as he is from that province. Now if some one from the North of the Netherlands (Fryslan or Groningen) says: I am from holland, then that's incorrect. That's the same as saying: I am from Dakota rather then saying I am from the US. Some people are offended if you call the Netherlands Holland. As some people from other provinces do not want to be associated with North and South Holland.
